Doyle Signs Bill to Allow Farm Utility Vehicles on Roadways
Wisconsin Ag Connection - March 11, 2010

Farmers who want to use their light utility vehicles on roadways for agricultural purposes can now do so legally. On Wednesday, Governor Jim Doyle signed the so-called 'gator bill' into law, which would allow vehicles such as Kubota RTV's, John Deere Gators, and Rangers to be used on public roads or highways for farm use.

Assembly Ag Committee Chair Amy Sue Vruwink says the measure is extremely beneficial to many farmers who use the vehicles to make doing chores easier.

"I authored this legislation so folks in our agricultural industry can have a safe and affordable alternative when doing routine chores," Vruwink said. "LUV's can be used to haul hay bales, inspect and repair irrigation systems, check fence lines, along with a variety of other uses for production agriculture."

As part of the new law, the machines must have basic working lights, brakes and a slow moving vehicle sign. The LUV is not required to be registered with DOT and is exempt from vehicle emission inspection requirements.

A lightweight utility vehicle is defined as an engine-driven device having a gross weight of more than 700 pounds, but not more than 1,999 pounds that is designed to travel on four or more low-pressure tires, is equipped with a cargo area.
