Catlett Encourages Dairy Farmers to Mine the Opportunities

MADISON, WIS. – The 2017 PDPW Business Conference was held last week Wednesday and Thursday in Madison, Wis. At Thursday’s morning Keynote Session, attendees were reminded by Dr. Lowell Catlett, Regents Professor in Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Business at New Mexico State University, that they play a critical role in feeding the growing world’s population, while embracing technology to advance the industry.

“I truly believe with all my heart and soul that this is the best time to be in agriculture and this is the best time to be alive!” said Catlett.  “In 2015, the U.S. became the first 18 trillion dollar economy and the world produced 83 trillion dollars. As people here and around the world have more money, they want more things and do more things. And as the population continues to grow, we need to bring the world more high meat proteins and that’s an opportunity.”

In fact, Catlett said that in the next 20-25 years the demand for meat, milk and eggs will increase by 50 percent and agriculture will be the key to feeding the world’s 7.3 billion people. That growing need for meat proteins combined with dairy contributing one-fifth of their beef to the export markets, presents great opportunities for expansion and return. Catlett continued to say that dairymen are poised to meet this need with their efficiency to produce, environmentally friendly practices and outstanding animal care.

Catlett cited examples of other industries that have stepped up the challenges and mined the opportunities to meet consumer needs. From computers to smart phones to GPS to Uber to Airbnb, Catlett noted that meeting those needs can generate a large return on investment. Embracing those demands can open up a world of great opportunity and profits.

“Get ready for the revolution in agriculture,” Catlett said. “Today’s world is driven by technology and you can have a system in place for one on one markets that never existed before. Milk, artisan cheese, happy cows, we can use the technology to sell all of it. It’s the best time ever to be alive if you are a cow and the best time to be in agriculture – let’s mine it.”
